It is interesting to realize that when it was originally released fifty years ago, "Smiley Smile" was quite a disappointment for most of the Beach Boys' fans…

Indeed, great expectations were put on the "Smile" project which was supposed to revolutionize pop music itself beating the Beatles themselves in their own territory but following Brian Wilson's breakdown,it would not be completed until more than three decades.

Today, a lot of water has passed under the bridge so "Smiley Smile" can be appreciated now with new fresh opened ears as it is quite a great Beach Boys record that certainly deserve better than its critical reviews.

Even if the production is a bit weird because of minimal arrangements, everything you can expect from a Beach Boys record is on "Smiley Smile": wonderful inventive vocals harmonies and quite an incredible line-up of brilliant compositions.
